Variegated Jade / Elephant Bush in 4 Inch Nursery Pot

The Variegated Elephant Bush (Portulacaria afra 'Variegata'), often sold as Variegated Mini Jade, is a hardy, succulent shrub native to South Africa. While it resembles the common Jade plant (Crassula ovata), it is a distinct species with smaller leaves and faster growth.

Core Characteristics

• Appearance: Features small, fleshy, cream-and-green leaves on striking reddish-brown stems. High light exposure can cause leaf edges to turn pink.
• Growth Habit: It has a sprawling or trailing habit, making it ideal for hanging baskets or training into a bonsai.
• Environmental Benefit: Known as a "carbon sponge," it is exceptionally efficient at absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
• Safety: Unlike the common Jade plant (which is toxic), the Elephant Bush is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets.

Care and Maintenance

• Light: Bright, indirect sunlight; can tolerate some direct sun but avoid harsh midday rays to prevent leaf scorch.
• Water: Use the "soak and dry" method; allow soil to dry out completely between waterings. Reduce significantly in winter.
• Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Use porous pots like terracotta to help moisture evaporate.
• Temperature: Prefers 65°F–85°F (18°C–29°C). Not frost-tolerant; protect or move indoors if temperatures drop below 30°F (-1°C).
• Pruning: Responds well to pruning to maintain shape or encourage bushiness.
