The "polka dot" plant is botanically known as Hypoestes phyllostachya, and is popular as a houseplant due to its distinctive, brightly-spotted foliage. It is also known by common names such as freckle face plant, flamingo plant, or measles plant.

Care and Maintenance

• Light: The plant thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves and cause the vibrant red spots to fade or bleach, while too little light will cause the plant to become leggy and the colors to dull. An east-facing window or a few feet back from a south or west-facing window is often ideal.
• Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. Overwatering can lead to root rot, while underwatering causes the plant to wilt dramatically.
• Humidity and Temperature: As a tropical plant, it prefers high humidity and warm temperatures, ideally between 65–80°F (18–27°C). You can boost humidity by misting the plant regularly, using a pebble tray with water, or placing it in a naturally humid room like a well-lit bathroom.
• Soil: A rich, well-draining potting mix is best. Mixing in perlite or orchid bark can improve drainage and prevent waterlogging.
• Pruning: Regularly pinch back the top two leaves on each stem to encourage a bushier, more compact growth habit. The plant produces small, inconspicuous flowers; removing the flower spikes helps divert energy back into foliage production and can extend the plant's lifespan, as it often dies back after flowering and going to seed.
