A green Schefflera, also known as an umbrella tree or umbrella plant, is a popular and easy-to-grow houseplant known for its glossy, dark green leaves. It is an adaptable plant that can tolerate a range of growing conditions and is also valued for its air-purifying qualities. There are two main types commonly grown as houseplants: the standard Schefflera actinophylla and the more compact dwarf variety, Schefflera arboricola.

To care for your green Schefflera, provide bright, indirect light, avoiding direct sun. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, reducing frequency in winter, and avoid overwatering. Maintain average room temperatures between 60–75°F (15–24°C) and provide moderate humidity. Use a well-draining potting mix. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a balanced liquid fertilizer and prune in spring to control size and encourage bushier growth. Repot every two to three years as needed. Propagation is easiest by stem cuttings placed in moist soil.

Common issues

Yellow or drooping leaves often indicate improper watering, while leggy stems suggest insufficient light. Watch for pests like aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and scale, treating with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
