Mint, widely known as Pudina in India, is an aromatic perennial herb belonging to the Mentha genus of the Lamiaceae family. Valued for centuries in both culinary and medicinal practices, it is recognized for its cooling sensation caused by the compound menthol.
Key Benefits & Uses
- Digestive Health: Pudina is a powerful carminative that helps relax digestive muscles to alleviate bloating, gas, and indigestion.
- Respiratory Relief: It’s refreshing aroma can clear congestion in the nose and throat, providing relief for asthma and common colds.
- Oral Care: Due to its antibacterial properties, it is a primary ingredient in toothpastes, mouthwashes, and breath fresheners.
- Topical Application: Mint oil or leaf paste is used to soothe headaches and skin irritations like acne or boils.
- Culinary Versatility: Fresh or dried leaves are essential for chutneys, teas, salads, and garnishing dishes like Pudina Paratha.
Care Requirements
- Sunlight: Mint thrives in full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, partial shade in the afternoon is preferred to protect the leaves from scorching. Indoor plants need a very bright location, such as a south or west-facing window, for at least 4-6 hours of daily sunlight.
- Watering: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch, and more frequently during dry spells or hot weather.
- Soil and Location: Mint prefers rich, well-draining soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0 to 7.0). It is highly invasive, so it is best grown in its own pot or a contained area, either above ground or in a bottomless container submerged in a garden bed with the rim above soil level.
- Temperature & Humidity: Mint does well in average room temperatures between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Indoor plants may struggle with low humidity during the winter, so misting the leaves occasionally or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water can help.
