The Aglaonema 'Pink Dalmatian' is a striking and low-maintenance indoor plant, also known as the Chinese evergreen. It is admired for its dark green foliage, which is uniquely speckled with soft pink and cream-colored spots, resembling a Dalmatian dog's coat. This ornamental plant is relatively easy to care for, making it popular with both beginners and experienced plant owners.

Plant features

  • Air-purifying properties: The 'Pink Dalmatian' helps to improve indoor air quality by filtering out toxins such as formaldehyde and benzene.
  • Compact size: With its manageable size, this variety fits well on tabletops, desks, or as part of a larger plant arrangement.
  • Good luck symbol: In Asian cultures, Aglaonema plants have been considered symbols of good luck and prosperity for centuries.
  • Toxic to pets: The Aglaonema 'Pink Dalmatian' contains calcium oxalate crystals and is toxic to pets if ingested.

Care guide

  • Light: The plant thrives in low to bright, indirect sunlight. Direct afternoon sun can scorch and damage its leaves. In lower light conditions, its growth will slow, and the variegation may fade.
  • Watering: Water your 'Pink Dalmatian' thoroughly but only when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Overwatering is a common issue that can lead to root rot.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix. A good combination is peat, perlite, and potting soil.
  • Humidity and temperature: As a tropical plant, it prefers moderate to high humidity levels. Normal household humidity is usually sufficient, but misting the leaves or placing the pot on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial. It thrives in temperatures between 65° and 80°F (18–27°C).
  • Fertilizing: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant once a month with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Fertilizing is not needed in winter.
  • Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years, or when the plant becomes root-bound, to refresh the soil and promote new growth. The best time to repot is in the spring.

Fiddle leaf

The fiddle-leaf fig ((Ficus\ lyrata\)) is a popular houseplant known for its large, violin-shaped leaves. While it has a reputation for being temperamental, it can thrive indoors with the right care. It is native to the tropical rainforests of western Africa and can grow into a large, stunning tree if well-maintained.

Care requirements

To keep your fiddle-leaf fig healthy, you must provide a stable environment with the correct balance of light, water, and temperature.

  • Light: Give your plant plenty of bright, indirect, or filtered light. A south- or east-facing window is ideal, but avoid intense, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot slightly every week or two to ensure even growth.
  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. The plant dislikes sitting in water, which can cause root rot, so ensure the pot has drainage holes and empty the drip tray.
  • Humidity: The fiddle-leaf fig thrives in high humidity. To increase moisture, mist the leaves occasionally, group it with other plants, or use a humidifier.
  • Temperature: This plant prefers consistent, warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts from doors and windows, and hot or cold air from vents.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A peat-based soil with perlite or a combination of cactus and houseplant potting soil works well.
  • Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plant once a month with a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer. Stop fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
