"Black" rubber plants are a cultivar of Ficus elastica, also known as the rubber tree or rubber fig, prized for its exceptionally dark, glossy foliage. The most common varieties with this deep color are 'Burgundy' and 'Black Prince', which feature leaves so dark green they often appear nearly black.
Characteristics of black rubber plants
- Aesthetic appeal: The dark, rich foliage of the black rubber plant makes it a striking and modern decorative element, providing a bold contrast against lighter walls and furniture.
- Air-purifying properties: Like other rubber plants, it is known to help improve indoor air quality by filtering out common pollutants such as formaldehyde and carbon monoxide.
- Growth habit: With proper care, black rubber plants are fast-growing and can reach impressive heights indoors, functioning as a beautiful floor plant.
Care for a black rubber plant
Black rubber plants are relatively low-maintenance, but require specific conditions to maintain their dark colour and glossy shine.
Light:
- Requires bright, indirect light to thrive.
- While it can tolerate lower light, too little sunlight will cause the leaves to lose their dark coloration.
- Avoid placing it in harsh, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Water:
- Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out completely before watering.
- Overwatering is the most common cause of problems, such as yellowing leaves and root rot.
- Empty any excess water from the pot's drainage saucer after watering.
- The plant's watering needs will decrease during the colder, dormant winter months.
Soil and pot:
- Use a well-draining, nutrient-rich potting mix. A mixture containing perlite, cocopeat, and compost is ideal.
- Always use a pot with drainage holes to prevent waterlogged soil.
- Repot the plant every one to two years, or when you see roots growing out of the drainage holes.
Temperature and humidity:
- Prefers warm, consistent temperatures between 60–80°F (15–27°C).
- Can be sensitive to cold drafts, so keep it away from open windows and heating or cooling vents.
- It tolerates average indoor humidity but appreciates higher humidity levels. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves or placing a humidifier nearby.
Fertilizer:
- Feed with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Stop fertilizing during the winter.
Pruning and cleaning:
- Regularly wipe the large, glossy leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust. This helps with photosynthesis and keeps the foliage looking its best.
- Prune the plant in the spring to control its size or encourage bushier growth.
