Perlite is a naturally occurring, lightweight volcanic glass used to improve soil aeration and drainage for healthier plant growth. It looks like small, white, porous granules and is a common additive in potting mixes.
Benefits of using perlite
- Improves aeration: Perlite's porous structure creates air pockets in the soil, preventing compaction and allowing roots to breathe. This reduces the risk of root rot from waterlogging.
- Enhances drainage: The granules allow excess water to drain quickly, ensuring your plant's roots don't sit in soggy soil.
- Retains moisture: While promoting drainage, perlite also holds a certain amount of water on its surface, providing a steady moisture supply to the plant's roots. This helps balance water availability.
- Sterile and pH neutral: Perlite is sterile, inert, and has a neutral pH (around 6.6–7.5). This means it won't introduce diseases or pests to your soil or alter its acidity.
- Promotes root development: By keeping the soil loose and well-aerated, perlite creates an environment where roots can expand freely and grow stronger.
- Long-lasting: Unlike organic amendments, perlite does not decompose over time, so it continues to provide benefits for years.
How to use perlite for plants
- For potting mixes: Mix perlite with potting soil, coco peat, or compost to improve aeration and drainage. A standard ratio is 1 part perlite to 3 or 4 parts soil. For plants that require excellent drainage, like succulents and cacti, you can increase the perlite proportion to 50%.
- For seed starting: Use fine-grade perlite alone or mix it with peat moss to create an ideal lightweight and airy medium for seed germination and developing seedlings.
- For propagating cuttings: Perlite is an excellent medium for rooting plant cuttings. Its structure provides the right balance of air and moisture to prevent rot and encourage strong root growth.
- As a top dressing: Use a layer of perlite on top of the soil in potted plants. It can act as an insulating layer, regulate soil temperature, and help retain moisture.
- In hydroponics: Perlite is a popular soilless growing medium in hydroponic systems, as its sterile and porous nature helps support plants and deliver nutrients effectively.
