The peace lily (Spathiphyllum) is a popular, low-maintenance evergreen houseplant known for its glossy green foliage and striking white, sail-like blooms. It is not a true lily but a member of the Araceae family, which also includes anthuriums and callas. Peace lilies are valued for their air-purifying qualities and deep symbolism, representing peace, healing, and harmony.
Benefits
- Air purification: The peace lily is on NASA's list of the top air-purifying plants. It is effective at removing common household toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene from the air.
- Positive energy: In Feng Shui, the peace lily is believed to balance energies and bring harmony and good vibes into a space.
- Stress reduction: Like many houseplants, the presence of a peace lily can create a calming atmosphere, which has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety.
- Increased humidity: By releasing moisture into the air through transpiration, the plant can help increase a room's humidity, which can be helpful during dry winter months.
Care and maintenance
Peace lilies are a great choice for beginner plant owners due to their simple care needs.
- Light: They prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate low-light conditions. Too much direct sunlight can scorch their leaves, causing brown tips. A north- or east-facing window is an ideal spot.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. A peace lily will visibly droop when thirsty, making it easy to know when it needs water. Water thoroughly and let the top inch of soil dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in the winter.
- Humidity: As a tropical plant, it thrives in high humidity. You can increase the moisture in the air by misting the leaves regularly or placing the pot on a tray of pebbles with water.
- Soil and potting: Peace lilies prefer a rich, well-draining, peat-based potting mix. They are happiest when slightly pot-bound and only need to be repotted when their roots completely fill the container.
- Fertilizing: Feed your peace lily with a balanced, all-purpose houseplant fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the spring and summer growing season. Fertilizing is not necessary in the winter.
- Pruning: Remove dead or yellowing leaves by cutting them at the base of the plant. Faded white blooms (spathes) will turn pale green over time and can be trimmed to encourage new growth.
