The Money Plant N'joy (Epipremnum aureum 'N'joy') is a popular variety of Pothos or Devil's Ivy, known for its elegant, heart-shaped green leaves with distinct, creamy-white variegation. It is a durable and low-maintenance indoor plant, making it ideal for beginners.
Key features
- Foliage: The plant's most notable characteristic is its vibrant, two-toned leaves. The variegation appears in well-defined, stark patches of white or cream, contrasting with the dark green, rather than the speckled pattern found on other varieties like 'Pearls and Jade'.
- Growth habit: The 'N'joy' is a vining plant that can be displayed in multiple ways. It can be grown in hanging baskets to trail downwards or trained to climb a moss pole for more upright growth.
- Air-purifying properties: Like other Pothos, the 'N'joy' is known to help purify the air by filtering out common indoor toxins.
- Symbolism: In many cultures, Money Plants are believed to bring good fortune, prosperity, and positive energy into the home.
How to care for a Money Plant 'N'joy'
Light
- Provide bright, indirect sunlight to maintain the leaves' distinctive white variegation.
- Avoid direct sun, as it can scorch the delicate white parts of the leaves.
- While it can tolerate lower light, this will cause the plant to grow more slowly and may reduce its variegation.
Water
- Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch.
- Allow the soil to dry out partially between waterings to prevent root rot, which is often indicated by yellowing leaves.
- If your plant's leaves are wilting or drooping, it is likely thirsty and needs water.
Soil
- Use a well-draining, well-aerated potting mix. A mixture for tropical plants containing peat moss, perlite, and coarse sand works well.
Temperature and humidity
- Keep the plant in a moderate room temperature between 65–85°F (18–29°C).
- Maintain average indoor humidity levels. For a boost, you can mist the leaves or place the pot on a tray of pebbles filled with water.
Fertilizer
- During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plant monthly with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
- Do not fertilize during the fall and winter, as the plant's growth slows down.
