The golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum) is a popular, low-maintenance houseplant known for its cascading vines and heart-shaped leaves marbled with yellow or cream. It is an exceptionally adaptable and hardy plant, earning it the nickname "Devil's Ivy" because it is very difficult to kill and can remain green even in low light.

Uses and benefits
  • Aesthetic appeal: The golden pothos is a versatile decorative plant. It can be grown in a hanging basket, allowed to trail from a shelf, or trained to climb a moss pole for larger leaves.
  • Air purification: NASA studies have shown that golden pothos is effective at removing indoor air pollutants, such as formaldehyde, xylene, and benzene.
  • Cultural significance: Known as the "money plant" in some cultures, it is believed to bring good luck, wealth, and prosperity. According to Feng Shui, placing it in the southeast corner of a room can attract positive energy.
  • Hydroponics: This plant can grow in water as well as soil. Cuttings can be rooted in a glass of water, and the plant can be kept hydroponically for long periods.
care
  • Light: The plant tolerates low light, but its characteristic leaf variegation will fade in deep shade. It prefers bright, indirect light. Direct sun can burn and scorch the foliage.
  • Water: Water your golden pothos when the top inch of the soil is dry to the touch. It is drought-tolerant, so it is better to underwater than overwater, as excessive watering can lead to root rot. The plant's leaves may droop slightly when it's thirsty, giving you a visual cue to water it.
  • Soil and fertilizer: A well-draining potting mix is ideal. You can use standard houseplant potting soil or a mix that includes peat moss and perlite. Feed the plant with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer growing seasons. Reduce feeding during the fall and winter.
  • Humidity and temperature: Golden pothos thrives in average household humidity but appreciates higher humidity. It does well in temperatures between 65–85°F (15–29°C) and should be protected from cold drafts.
  • Pruning: Prune your plant regularly to maintain its shape, encourage fuller growth, and manage its length. You can take cuttings from the pruned stems to propagate new plants.
