The Polka Dot Plant with pink spots is properly known as Hypoestes phyllostachya, and is a popular, non-toxic houseplant grown for its striking, speckled foliage. Its vibrant pink, red, or white patterns against green leaves add a cheerful touch to indoor spaces and are relatively easy to care for with the right conditions.
Care and Maintenance
Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal for maintaining vibrant leaf colors. Too much direct sun can scorch the leaves and cause colors to fade, while too little light leads to the colors disappearing or the plant becoming leggy. An east or west-facing window is often a good location.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never soggy. Water when the top 1/2 to 1 inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Reduce watering frequency during the winter months. The plant will droop dramatically when it needs water.
Humidity: Polka dot plants thrive in high humidity (around 50% or higher). Increase humidity by misting occasionally, placing the pot on a pebble tray with water, or using a humidifier.
Temperature: Maintain temperatures between 65-80°F (18-27°C). Protect the plant from cold drafts and sudden temperature fluctuations.
Soil: Use a well-draining, organically rich potting mix. A mix with added peat moss, perlite, or compost works well to ensure proper drainage and prevent root rot.
