The fiddle-leaf fig ((Ficus Lyrata)) is a popular houseplant known for its large, violin-shaped leaves. While it has a reputation for being temperamental, it can thrive indoors with the right care. It is native to the tropical rainforests of western Africa and can grow into a large, stunning tree if well-maintained.
Care requirements
To keep your fiddle-leaf fig healthy, you must provide a stable environment with the correct balance of light, water, and temperature.
- Light: Give your plant plenty of bright, indirect, or filtered light. A south- or east-facing window is ideal, but avoid intense, direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot slightly every week or two to ensure even growth.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry. The plant dislikes sitting in water, which can cause root rot, so ensure the pot has drainage holes and empty the drip tray.
- Humidity: The fiddle-leaf fig thrives in high humidity. To increase moisture, mist the leaves occasionally, group it with other plants, or use a humidifier.
- Temperature: This plant prefers consistent, warm temperatures between 60°F and 85°F (15°C to 29°C). Keep it away from cold drafts from doors and windows, and hot or cold air from vents.
- Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix. A peat-based soil with perlite or a combination of cactus and houseplant potting soil works well.
- Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed your plant once a month with a high-nitrogen liquid fertilizer. Stop fertilizing during the dormant winter months.
