The Ficus Moclame (Ficus microcarpa 'Moclame'), also known as the Indian Laurel Fig, is a popular ornamental evergreen known for its dense, glossy green foliage. It is highly valued as a low-maintenance indoor houseplant and an adaptable outdoor shrub.

Benefits

  • Air Purification: It acts as a natural filter, absorbing airborne toxins like formaldehyde and benzene while increasing oxygen levels.
  • Mental Well-being: Being around these plants can reduce stress, boost mood, and improve productivity.
  • Aesthetic Versatility: Its dense canopy makes it ideal for topiary, hedging, and bonsai.
  • Environmental Impact: Outdoors, it supports biodiversity by providing habitats for small insects and helps cool spaces by increasing local humidity.
  • Medicinal Uses: In traditional medicine, parts of the plant have been used to treat pain, fever, and respiratory issues.

Care Guide

  • Sunlight: Thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate partial shade, avoid harsh, direct midday sun which can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. Overwatering is a common cause of root rot, while underwatering leads to brown, crispy leaves.
  • Humidity & Temperature: Prefers high humidity (above 50%) and stable temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C–27°C). Avoid placing it near drafts, heaters, or AC vents.
  • Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix rich in organic matter (e.g., a mix of peat moss, perlite, and pine bark).
  • Fertilization: Apply a balanced liquid fertilizer monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce feeding in winter.
  • Pruning: Regularly trim to maintain its shape and remove dead leaves. Always wear gloves, as the milky sap can irritate the skin.
  • Toxicity: Note that the plant is toxic to pets and humans if ingested, causing mouth and stomach irritation.
