The Dracaena compacta, also known as the compact dracaena or sometimes called a "corn plant" or "Janet Craig," is a slow-growing, low-maintenance houseplant native to Southeast Africa. It is highly regarded for its adaptability and air-purifying qualities.

Key characteristics
    • Appearance: The plant features thick, green stems with dense clumps of short, deep-green, glossy leaves. Its name "compacta" refers to its tight, bushy foliage, which is less spread out than other Dracaena varieties.
    • Growth habit: As a slow-growing tree, it is well-suited for a consistent location in a home or office without quickly outgrowing its space. It can eventually reach over 2 meters in height in its ideal conditions.
    • Air purification: Like other members of the Dracaena family, it is effective at removing indoor air pollutants such as formaldehyde, benzene, and trichloroethylene.
Care guide
  • Light: The Dracaena compacta thrives in medium to bright, indirect light. It can tolerate low-light conditions but will grow slower. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as it can scorch the leaves.
  • Watering: Water moderately and allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Overwatering can cause root rot, so it is important to ensure the pot has proper drainage. During the winter, the plant will need less water.
  • Soil: This plant is not picky about its soil and can be grown in water, coco-peat, or regular soil. Good drainage is the most important factor.
  • Fertilizer: During the growing season (spring and summer), feed the plant with a balanced liquid fertilizer every two to three months. Avoid fertilizing in the winter.
  • Pruning: Trim off any yellowing or damaged leaves to keep the plant looking tidy. Use sharp, clean shears and cut at an angle to encourage new, bushier growth.
