Dieffenbachia, commonly known as dumb cane, is a tropical flowering plant treasured for its lush, variegated foliage. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, this plant is a popular and relatively low-maintenance houseplant.

Key characteristics
  • Appearance: Dieffenbachia features large, oval, pointed leaves with attractive patterns of white, cream, or yellow against a green background.
  • Size: As a houseplant, it typically grows 3–6 feet tall and 1–3 feet wide, but some cultivars can grow much larger.
  • Flowers: While it may occasionally produce inconspicuous greenish-white flowers indoors, they are not the main ornamental feature.
  • Air purification: Dieffenbachia is effective at removing common indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene.
Care guide
  • Light: Provide bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. It can tolerate lower light, but its growth may slow, and the variegation may become less pronounced.
  • Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feel dry to the touch. Water thoroughly, letting excess drain away, but do not let the pot sit in soggy soil, which can lead to root rot.
  • Temperature and humidity: Maintain average room temperatures between 65–75°F (18–24°C). This tropical plant thrives in moderate to high humidity.
  • Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every four to six weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
  • Soil: Use a well-draining, fertile potting mix, such as a loamy soil or a peat-based mix.
  • Pruning: You can prune off yellowing or dead lower leaves as they appear. If the plant becomes too tall and leggy, you can cut the top off to encourage bushier growth.
