Cryptanthus Pink, commonly known as the Earth Star, is a striking terrestrial bromeliad native to the rainforest floors of Brazil. Unlike many other bromeliads that grow as epiphytes on trees, Cryptanthus grows directly in the soil and is prized for its low-growing, star-shaped rosette of vibrant foliage.
Key Characteristics
- Appearance: Features long, tapering, wavy-edged leaves arranged in a flat rosette. The "Pink" varieties, such as Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Pink Starlight' or 'Super Pink', display brilliant shades of bubblegum to hot pink with longitudinal green or cream stripes.
- Size: A compact, slow-growing plant that typically reaches 3–6 inches in height and spreads 6–12 inches wide.
- Flowers: Produces small, inconspicuous white flowers nestled in the center of the rosette.
- Lifecycle: The plant is monocarpic, meaning it blooms once and then slowly dies, but not before producing "pups" (offsets) at the base to continue the cycle.
- Safety: Generally considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans.
Care Guide
Light: Bright, indirect light is critical; low light causes pink hues to fade to green, while direct midday sun can scorch leaves.
Water: Keep soil consistently moist but never soggy. Do not water into the center “cup” as this can cause rot.
Soil: Use a well-draining mix such as bromeliad/orchid potting media or blend of peat, perlite and bark.
Humidity: Thrives in high humidity (50-90%). Frequent misting or using a pebble tray is recommended.
Temperature: Prefers warm conditions between 60°F and 80°F (15°C–27°C). Protect from frost and temperatures below 50°F.
Fertilizer: Feed sparingly every 4–6 weeks during the growing season with diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer.
