Crotons have a reputation for being finicky, but they are fairly easy to maintain once they adapt to their environment. 

• Light: Provide bright, indirect light for at least six hours a day to maintain the most vibrant foliage. Too little light will cause new leaves to be primarily green, while direct sun can scorch the leaves.
• Water: Keep the soil consistently moist during the spring and summer growing season, watering when the top inch of soil feels dry. Reduce watering in the winter. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
• Temperature and humidity: As a tropical plant, crotons thrive in warm, humid conditions. They prefer temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C) and can suffer leaf loss if exposed to temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Protect them from cold drafts and increase humidity with regular misting or a humidifier.
• Soil and fertilizer: Use a well-draining, humus-rich potting soil. During the growing season (spring through summer), fertilize bi-monthly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer, and reduce feeding in the fall and winter.
• Toxicity: All parts of the croton plant are poisonous if ingested by humans or pets. The sap can also cause skin irritation. Keep the plant out of reach of children and pets.
