Calcium nitrate is used in plants primarily to provide two essential nutrients: calcium and nitrogen. By delivering these nutrients in a readily absorbable form, it enhances overall plant strength, improves fruit quality, and corrects common deficiencies. It is often applied as a water-soluble fertilizer via fertigation, soil drenching, or foliar spray.

Key uses and benefits

  • Corrects nutrient deficiencies: It effectively prevents and treats calcium-related issues such as blossom-end rot in tomatoes and peppers, bitter pit in apples, and tip-burn in leafy greens.
  • Strengthens plant structure: Calcium fortifies plant cell walls, which improves overall stability and makes plants more resilient to stress, disease, and physical damage.
  • Boosts plant growth: The highly available nitrate nitrogen promotes vigorous growth and is vital for protein production and photosynthesis.
  • Enhances fruit and crop quality: By promoting stronger cell walls, calcium nitrate helps produce larger, firmer, and more uniform fruits and vegetables with a longer shelf life.
  • Improves soil health: The calcium content can displace sodium salts in the soil, helping to improve soil structure, aeration, and water infiltration, which is especially beneficial in saline soils.
  • Increases nutrient uptake: It improves the absorption of other important nutrients, such as potassium and magnesium, from the soil.
  • Regulates soil PH: As it is readily absorbed by plants, it has a net effect of neutralizing acidity and improving the availability of trace elements in acidic soils.

Application methods

Calcium nitrate is a versatile fertilizer that can be applied in several ways:

  • Foliar spray: For a fast-acting solution to correct immediate deficiencies, dissolve the granules in water and spray directly onto the leaves. This is particularly effective for correcting blossom-end rot.
  • Fertigation: Due to its high solubility, calcium nitrate can be easily injected into irrigation systems, such as drip lines or sprinklers, for precise and continuous nutrient delivery.
  • Soil application: Granular calcium nitrate can be mixed into the soil as a top or side dressing. This is often done before planting or during the growth and flowering stages.

Considerations

  • Cost: Calcium nitrate is often more expensive than other fertilizers.
  • Potential nutrient imbalances: Over-application can lead to nutrient imbalances and can affect the uptake of other elements like magnesium and potassium.
  • Environmental concerns: The high solubility of nitrates means that excess fertilizer can leach into the groundwater and cause pollution.
  • Compatibility issues: It should not be mixed with fertilizers containing sulfates or phosphates in a concentrated solution, as this can cause precipitation.
  • Corrosive nature: The fertilizer is corrosive and should be handled and stored with care.
