The Aglaonema 'Moonlight Bay' or Jharna, also known as Chinese Evergreen, is a houseplant treasured for its elegant, low-maintenance nature and silvery-green foliage. This decorative plant was developed from a mutation of the popular 'Silver Bay' cultivar and is a great choice for beginners.
Features
- Foliage: It has broad, lance-shaped, glossy leaves with a striking pattern of light silvery-green variegation in the center and dark green edges. Some versions, sometimes called 'Pink Stem', also have pink stems.
- Growth habit: It has a compact, bushy form and is a slow-growing evergreen perennial.
- Air purification: As part of the Aglaonema genus, it is known to help filter common indoor air toxins, including benzene and formaldehyde.
- Size: The plant typically reaches a height of 1.5 to 3 feet when grown indoors.
General care tips
- Light: Prefers low to bright, indirect light. The lighter the variegation on the leaves, the more indirect light the plant needs to maintain its color. Direct sunlight can burn the leaves.
- Watering: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out before watering again. Overwatering can lead to root rot, so proper drainage is crucial.
- Soil: Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix.
- Temperature and humidity: 'Moonlight Bay' thrives in warm, humid conditions. Maintain temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C) and protect the plant from cold drafts.
- Fertilizer: During the spring and summer growing season, feed it once a month with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Reduce feeding in the fall and winter.
- Pruning: Prune only as needed to remove any damaged or yellowing leaves to promote healthy new growth.
- Repotting: Repot every two to three years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
