The Aglaonema 'Emerald Bay,' also known as Chinese Evergreen, is a low-maintenance, decorative houseplant with lush, silvery-green and deep green variegated foliage. It is known for its ability to thrive in low-light conditions and is also an effective air purifier.
Benefits
- Air purification: The 'Emerald Bay' is a NASA-recommended air purifier, helping to remove indoor air pollutants like formaldehyde and benzene.
- Aesthetic appeal: Its elegant, variegated foliage makes it a popular indoor decoration that can act as a focal point in any room.
- Good luck symbol: According to Feng Shui, Chinese Evergreens are considered a symbol of good luck, wealth, and prosperity.
Care guide
Light
- Prefers bright, indirect light, though it can tolerate lower light levels.
- Direct sunlight will scorch and burn the leaves, so avoid placing it in a harsh, sunny spot.
Water
- Allow the top inch of the soil to dry out completely before watering.
- Water thoroughly, letting the water drain out of the pot's drainage holes.
- Overwatering can lead to root rot and yellowing leaves.
Soil
- Use a well-draining potting mix that is rich in organic matter. A good mix is 50% coco peat, 30% garden soil, and 20% vermicompost.
Temperature and humidity
- Thrives in average indoor temperatures between 65–80°F (18–27°C).
- Protect the plant from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C).
- While it tolerates average household humidity, it will appreciate higher humidity levels. You can increase humidity by misting it occasionally or placing it near a humidifier.
Fertilizer
- Feed with a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer once a month during the spring and summer growing seasons.
- Dilute the fertilizer to half-strength to avoid over-fertilizing.
- Reduce or stop fertilizing during the winter months.
Repotting
- This is a slow-growing plant, so it typically only needs to be repotted every one to two years.
- Repot when the roots start to grow out of the drainage holes.
- Go up only one or two pot sizes at a time.
